Epiphany and Galette des rois

Celebrating Epiphany 2025

In 2025, Epiphany will be celebrated on Sunday, January 5!

This date, although traditionally set on January 6 in the liturgical calendar, is often brought forward to the first Sunday in January to allow more people to celebrate with family and friends.

The origin of Epiphany

Epiphany has its roots in Christian tradition.

It commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men - Gaspard, Melchior and Balthazar - who came to pay homage to the infant Jesus by offering him symbolic gifts:

  • Gold: Symbol of royalty.
  • Incense: Symbol of divinity.
  • Myrrh: Symbol of suffering and humanity.

This feast, marking the manifestation (from the Greek epiphaneia) of Jesus to the world, is also an opportunity to gather around a long-established gourmet tradition: the galette des rois.

The galette des rois and its variations

Traditionally, we share a galette des rois, in which a bean is hidden. Whoever finds the bean becomes king or queen for the day, and wears the crown proudly!

Two recipes are vying for the hearts and minds of gourmets:

Traditional frangipane cake

Frangipane is a mixture of almond cream and pastry cream:

  • Almond cream: butter, sugar, almond powder and eggs.
  • Crème pâtissière: milk, eggs, sugar and flour for a creamier texture.

It is said to be lighter and creamier, perfect for a rich, festive galette.

Almond cream galette (simpler)

This version is made only with almond cream, without pastry cream.

It is denser but also quicker to prepare.

Enhance your galette with our homemade jams

For an even more gourmet and original touch to your galette, why not add our homemade jams?

Perfect wedding suggestions :

  • Apricot: For a sweet, slightly tart note.
  • Raspberry: A fruity, sparkling contrast.
  • Blueberry: For an intense, sweet touch.
  • Pear: Delicately fragrant.

How do you incorporate jam?

  • For the heart of the galette: Add a thin layer of jam under the frangipane.
  • Directly into the frangipane: stir a few tablespoons into the cream.
  • As an accompaniment: Serve a spoonful on the side for an even more indulgent dessert.

Conclusion Whether you're a fan of the frangipane galette or the almond cream galette, Epiphany is the perfect occasion to share a convivial, gourmet moment.
